On April 14, 1997, approximately 2100, mountain daylight time, a Hughes, OH-6A, helicopter, N6638P, was substantially damaged during a practice night touchdown autorotation at Marfa Municipal Airport, Marfa, Texas. The instructor pilot, a FAA designated flight examiner, was giving night recurrent training to the student. During a practice touchdown autorotation the aircraft touched down on the heels of the skids. The student applied aft cyclic during the touchdown which allowed the main rotor system to contact the tailboom. The tailboom was severed resulting in substantial damage.
